Artist's Statement

I work to create my own personal and spiritual view of the natural landscape, and I work on paper with watercolor. My paintings are called fictional landscapes, because none are about a specific place in time, but are places reinvented in my imagination. Most of the paintings are representational, however many are more abstract. There are three types of landscape images that I research and work with. The first is an aerial view, which is a celebration of the landscape. The second is an image of a clearing, which is a coming to an understanding of the land. And third, is a rear view mirror image, which is an exploration of the past.

Over the past 25 years I have traveled numerous times throughout the Midwest and the desert south west to photograph the land scape and to do research for my work. In the American West I have visited Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico,, Nevada and California researching the unique quality of the light and the horizon line.

I am inspired now to start incorporating the figure in the landscape, and this is the new direction I will be taking in my work.

I am educated in the Midwest with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts,, concentrating in Printmaking, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Illinois. I have exhibited in over 50 national and international juried exhibitions. I have also had eight (8) solo exhibition in the last ten (10) years. My next solo shows will be at the Center for Visual Arts in Wausau, Wisconsin the Wisconsin Arts Board, Madison, Wisconsin, both in the fall of 2002.
