Biography

Janet Walsh

Janet Walsh, AWS, returned to live in Pennsylvania after many years in Manhattan and Long Island. Ms Walsh studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Student League in Manhattan. She continues to teach workshops, both in the United States and Overseas. In addition to teaching and painting, she juries and judges many regional and national art shows.

Ms. Walsh’s book, “Watercolor Made Easy”, published by Watson-Guptil has been reprinted many times, with one version reprinted especially for the United Kingdom. “Despite the misleading simplicity of the title, this is a singularly comprehensive book covering not only the techniques used by the author, but her feelings, thoughts and approach towards her painting”. She then developed a four part instructional video series based upon this book.

Limited editions and prints of her work have been published in the United States, Europe and Japan. Her work can be found in many corporate and private collections, and has been exhibited in numerous museums across the United States.
Ms. Walsh, President of the American Watercolor Society, A Fellow in the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, London England. She holds memberships in the National Arts Club, Allied Artists of America, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists, Art Students League, and Artists Fellowships. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.

Ms. Walsh has received many awards and honors some of which are: AWS Bronze Medal of Honor, Edgar Whitney Award, T.H. Sanders Award, Metropolitan Museum Art Award, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Award, Winsor-Newton Award, Katherine and Marshall Howe Award, Art Students League Concurs Award, Adirondack Nation Show Award and 1st Bank of Westland Award.

The Workshops for 2008

If you are interested in any of the following workshops, please write to the specific address listed below.
Janet will not be holding studio workshops this summer.

A Janet Walsh workshop offers a unique opportunity for beginners as well as advanced painters to grow as artists. Watercolor and floral setups are used as "tools" to enter into the creative process.

She begins the process each day with "warm-up" exercises, which provide an opportunity to become centered and to open creative blocks.

Using flowers as "live models", Janet shares the thought processes that go into creating a floral setup. Continuing with a "hands on" approach, she guides students to consider value, shape, size, color, rhythm and composition in setting up their own individual bouquets.

Students are then encouraged to create paintings that are based on their own sensory (sight, touch, smell) and intuitive responses. Individual help ensures that each artist can accomplish what they want and encourages the individuality of each person's artistic vision.

During the course of the week, Janet continues with lectures and demonstrations dealing with such elements as containers, fabrics, backgrounds and finishing a painting. Other creative exercises, such as collage are introduced to discover new ways to deal with problems.

Each student will have ample time to create, experiment, paint and have fun as they enjoy the camaraderie of fellow artists, individually and in the group.

My Book

"Watercolor Made Easy" is in its fourth printing. One reprinting was made exclusively for the United Kingdom. An English review of the book is as follows:

"Despite the misleading simplicity of its title, this is a singularly comprehensive book covering not only the techniques used by the author, but her feelings, thoughts and approach towards her painting. She concentrates chiefly on flowers, with a few still lifes of vegetables, and a short chapter on plein air or outdoor painting. No weekend "pansy painter", this lady; she paints elaborate complex flower arrangements while retaining the wetness and fluidity of her medium. This is a beautiful book, well organized and lavishly illustrated."

Watercolor Made Easy can be purchased directly and will be personally autographed on request. For pricing, see our Order Form.
