Joyce Findlay, Canadian Artist

I started painting as a hobby, prior to my retirement. As I struggled with those first paintings I had no idea of the journey I was embarking upon. Since I picked up that first brush, I have never looked back. It is my passion and has enriched my life beyond measure. I am still learning and will continue to learn. I am dedicated to the pursuit of the perfect watercolor. I may not find it in my lifetime, but it is the pursuit and the fight to find the best within me. Each of us has a choice in life, find a passion and do the best with it that you can. My subjects are varied and are influenced by our summer home in Terrace, British Columbia, Canada and our winter home in San Jose del Cabo, Baja, Mexico.

MY PASSION

I was walking with a friend one morning, and I happened to mention that I would love to be able to paint. She said, If you would like to paint, why don't you?" Well my answer to that was, "I can't". She replied, "better to try and to fail, than not to try at all." So, at 50 years of age, when I was ready to retire, and lay back and enjoy life, I discovered a passion for painting and a talent that I would never have dreamed existed. I was always drawn to watercolors as a medium. I would spend hours in art gallerys, admiring the "artists" that could create such beauty. The very word "artist" invoked a feeling of awe in me. I now have an understanding of what it means to be an artist. To me it is someone who is overpowered by the simple beauty that surrounds us in our everyday life, and finds the means to recreate it. It is also someone who is not afraid to try new things and to experiment and go beyond their comfort zone.
