Mary J Maxam, works primarily in watercolor and gouache, enjoying the versatile possibilities of both. Her paintings are a response to familiar subjects, seen daily and discoveries that take place through the painting process. Her work has been included in many regional and national exhibitions, including the Rocky Mountain National and the Midwest Watercolor Open. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society and the Montana Watercolor Society. She currently shows through the Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane, Washington, the Entree Gallery, Priest Lake, Idaho and Zantman's Gallery in Sun Valley.

I paint those subjects that attract my attention and please my eye, and find flyfishing a pleasing and beautiful subject to watch. The fluid movement, attention to detail and careful planning of fishing all seem to parallel the activity of painting in many ways. I enjoy watching the play of light on the fishing scene throughout the day, and look for drama in color, light and movement in both fisherman and landscape. My paintings make use of sketches working from life and reference photos I've taken on trips with my husband and friends throughout the Northwest.
