Robert Highsmith received his art training from New Mexico State University and the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, graduating with honors in 1971. He has had many one-man and group shows throughout the country, and is the recipient of over a hundred awards for watercolor and painting. His work is in numerous corporate and private collections in this country and abroad. He is currently a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the South Carolina Watercolor Society and the New Mexico Watercolor Society. His work is represented by the Calhoun Street Gallery, Bluffton, SC, the Glenn Cutter Gallery in Las Cruces, NM, Gregg and Co, Albuquerque, NM, Four Red Bats, Silver City, NM and Arts Exclusive in Simsbury, CT. Though he paints a variety of subjects, Mr. Highsmith has a primary interest in landscape. Working mostly in watercolor, he depicts the simplicity of nature, usually with strong and often stark contrasts. His paintings make simple statements that capture the light of New Mexico’s life and landscape, the quiet moods of the lowcountry marshes and shorelines and the landscape of New England. Mr. Highsmith moved to Las Cruces, NM in 2003 with his wife Joni, son Dylan and daughter Leslie.
